Welcome to Huddersfield

The ever-changing property market will always create conversation and one question that every investor, homebuyer or tenant is asking is ‘Which area is best?’ This month, we take a look at the historical market town of Huddersfield and why this Yorkshire gem should definitely be on your list of places to consider.

A brief introduction

Huddersfield is a large market town located in West Yorkshire with a history that dates back more than 4000 years. Nestled between Manchester and Leeds, it’s conveniently located to a number of popular northern cities and towns and boasts fantastic road and rail connections. Previously known for its woollen textiles, nowadays Huddersfield’s trade and manufacturing industry is far more diverse. The University of Huddersfield dates back to 1825 and is regarded as one of the best higher education facilities in Great Britain for environmental performance.

The local economy

Huddersfield is often referred to as part of the Leeds City Region. As a result of this, it enjoys one of the biggest economies around. Home to a mixture of businesses, the area’s total economy is estimated to be around £6 billion, and expected to rise 37% by 2026.

Government regeneration plans

Huddersfield’s government are continuously seeking ways in which to improve the area, both economically and socially. In 2015, 21 new housing sites were proposed by the council, which could bring 4000 new homes to the area. More recently a £180 million development was approved in Grimescar Valley, creating 190 new homes as well as a variety of community benefits. Lindley Moor is also currently in development.

In addition to this, the government has also been exploring transport improvements as well as regeneration of historic sites such as Newsome Mills. Commercially, a number of areas are also set to be redeveloped. Various grade II listed buildings have been turned into incredible office locations and Huddersfield has also made way for new industrial units, which were eagerly awaited by small and big business.

How to get to Huddersfield

Easily accessible for both the M1 and M62, Huddersfield is extremely well-connected to other parts of the UK. The town is also surrounded by a ring round, providing access to surrounding towns. Huddersfield’s town centre is mainly pedestrianised, making it a safer place for visitors and residents.

Huddersfield’s railway station also provides direct access to a number of cities and towns including Liverpool, Sheffield, Leeds, Hull, Newcastle upon Tyne, York, and Middlesbrough. In addition to this, as one of the busiest bus terminals in the whole of West Yorkshire, Huddersfield’s bus service is popular for commuters and daily travellers. The town also offers a free bus service, giving locals and visitors a zero-fare way to explore the town.

Local life

Huddersfield is often described as having the best of both worlds. Nestled in some of Britain’s best countryside yet close enough to a number of bustling cities, there really is something for everyone. With a history dating back more than 4000 years, the town also has a number of cultural experiences on offer including The National Coal Mining Museum and the West Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

Things to do, see and eat

From popular chain favourites, budget eats and fancy eateries ideal for that special occasion, Huddersfield has something for every budget and taste. The streets are lined with a variety of independent restaurants and if you want to continue your evening into the early hours, there’s a whole host of bars and clubs to choose from. Live music is also well catered for as well as sports.

Sports

Football and rugby are two of the area’s most popular sports, with plenty of places to catch the latest game. Did you know that Huddersfield was the birthplace of rugby league? In addition to this, Huddersfield Town F.C. is the main football club and were the first club to win the league championship three times in a row.
